CARAMEL COLOR IN FOODS - IS IT SAFE?

February 16, 2011 [and still legal 5 years later?]

WASHINGTON—The caramel coloring used in Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and [some] foods [and nutrition supplements] is contaminated with two cancer-causing chemicals and should be banned, according to a regulatory petition filed today by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

“In contrast to the caramel one might make at home by melting sugar in a saucepan, the artificial brown coloring in colas and some other products is made by reacting sugars with ammonia and sulfites under high pressure and [high] temperatures. Chemical reactions result in the formation of 2-methylimidazole and 4 methylimidazole, which in government-conducted studies caused lung, liver, or thyroid cancer or leukemia in laboratory mice or rats.” California’s public health officials have placed 4-methylimidazole on that state's list of known carcinogens, with University of California (Davis) recently discovering significant levels of 4 methylimidazole in colas far exceeds what that state deems safe. Be prepared for warning labels on diet and regular Coke and Pepsi and many other soft drinks, as though that will prevent the risks anymore than such labels make trans fats or cigarettes healthy.

Colas, both diet and regular, are contaminated with a variety of potentially hazardous substances, caramel color being but one, the 10 teaspoons per can of obesity-producing high-fructose corn syrup has been found to be a great health risk as well as the phosphoric acid. Not only does the caramel color demonstrate a positive association with cancers of various kinds, it is also associated with hypertension (high blood pressure) according to a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). [Some colas have made some adjustments to their formulas but not such that we would drink or recommend them.]

This scorched sugar, including corn syrup, is also found in gravies, sauces, and many baked goods for uniform brown color. Americans first eat with their eyes, then their taste buds, it is said. If it looks good and tastes good, they eat it, no matter the nutritional value or increased risk load it presents the overwhelmed body. Toxic chemicals are hard on the liver, kidneys, and brain. They accumulate in the body, including in these parts as well as in body fats. I think of consuming such as found in foods and non-foods as throwing garbage into the temple of the Holy Spirit, whose temple we are; it is more radical than walking into church next Sabbath or Sunday and tossing a bag of garbage into the sanctuary! If you are taking in such foods and non-foods into His temple, caramel color is one more major reason to stop! It may also be found in some nutriceuticals and vitamin isolates. Check your ingredients lists to be certain. You may view the rest of the article at CSPI’s website.

The best way to “detox” is to avoid toxic foods--do not consume them!
